Facebook’s huge new data processing centre, currently under construction in Clonee, County Meath, is being built to house some of the world’s most sophisticated electronic machines; but it will also include solid limestone seating from McKeon Stone.

Civil Works with Roadbridge

McKeon Stone are working with Roadbridge, the main engineering contractors for the site, and will be supplying outdoor seating using solid Kilkenny Blue limestone from our quarry. The use of our natural stone at the Clonee campus is very much in line with Facebook’s stated vision for the project, which stresses high-quality products, natural materials, and a sustainable approach.

Limestone Seating

There will be 24 of our Kilkenny Blue limestone outdoor seats, varying in length from 1.8 metres to 3.7 metres, total weight 72 tonnes the smallest of them weighs two tons; the largest considerably more. The seating will form part of an extensive landscaped recreational area which is planned as part of the data processing centre.

The Clonee Data Processing Centre

There are expected to be about two thousand people employed in the building of the data processing centre, the sixth to be built in the world, but only the second in Europe. The first phase of this enormous project will include eight data halls across two buildings: the site covers 31,000 square metres, and when finished it will bring up to a hundred permanent jobs to Clonee. Among the advanced environmental features of the data centre are its energy use, which will be entirely from renewable sources such as wind turbines, and a cooling system using the surrounding air, for which a filtration system to remove Irish Sea salt has had to be specially designed.
