The Bather based at Portarlington swimming pool
Originally from Dublin, Dick was born in 1938 and he grew up in Clontarf before heading across the Atlantic in his teens. He returned to Ireland in the early sixties. His reputation as a sculptor grew through group shows and one-man exhibitions, winning him an increasing number of commissions, both public and private. He developed his own distinctive, rugged style that set him apart from any passing trends. Though often huge, his works tended to explore various aspects of humanity.
His personal drift back to the countryside began in the eighties when he moved to Fontstown near Athy in County Kildare. In 1990, he purchased a small farm in Bree where he converted a shed to become a studio capable of handling large pieces carved from limestone, often weighing several tonnes.
